16 Scientific Studies Confirm It, Antidepressants Cause People To Commit Suicide

Antidepressants like Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft have been the big topic in the news lately. It seems that much of the scientific evidence showing the link between suicide and antidepressants has been being kept secret by the big drug companies like Glaxo Smith Kline, Eli Lilly and Pfizer.

I guess I could see why… Who wants to tell their customers: “Not only do our drugs make you fat and kill your sex drive, but they also make you want to kill yourself”!

On top of that, these drugs bring in billions of dollars in sales for the big drug companies every year. Paxil’s sales are over $1.9 billion. Prozac’s are over $2.5 billion. Zoloft sells over $2.9 billion. A grand total of $7.3 BILLION dollars per year in major antidepressant sales and that doesn’t even count the smaller brands and generics. Combined, the total spent on depression treatments is estimated at over $17 billion per year.

Today Bloomberg is reporting that 16 separate scientific studies have confirmed that Paxil can cause a 7 fold increase in successful acts of suicide. Keep in mind that the study didn’t show what the increase was in for attempted suicide or the amount of people who had suicidal thoughts. One can only speculate on what that increase was. I can imagine it must be quite high if there was a 700% increase in successful suicides - what do you think the increase was: 10 times more likely to consider suicide? 20 times more likely? 30 times? Even a 2 time increase is unacceptable in my book. How dare psychiatrists and drug companies take advantage of people who are depressed and feed them drugs that cause suicide! Doesn’t this sound insane to you?

In December, the U.K. Department of Health issued new guidance that Paxil, Pfizer Inc.’s Zoloft and Wyeth’s Effexor shouldn’t be given to patients with mild depression as an initial treatment. In April, European health regulators warned that Paxil, Eli Lilly & Co.’s Prozac and other antidepressants shouldn’t be used to treat children due to a risk of suicide. In July, the US FDA ruled that the drug companies had to put a “black box” label on their drugs warning of the risks in increased suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts.

I can only speculate on how many people have lost their lives, their loved ones and their sanity to these horrible drugs. I would bet it’s in the millions though. When will psychiatrists and the drug companies be held accountable?
