Electro-Shock Therapy Caused Brain Damage - Psychiatrist Ordered To Pay $635,000 in Damages

I recently found this article about a jury that found a psychiatrist liable for causing brain damage to his patient. The patient was referred for intensive electroshock procedures (practitioners prefer to call it, electro-convulsive treatment ECT) that left her permanently damaged. The patient, Peggy S. Salters is a 60 year old former psychiatric nurse. She was subjected to 13 electroshocks over the course of about 2 weeks. The jury found that her loss of 30 years of memory and cognitive impairment–which are demonstrable symptoms of brain damage–was due to ECT. They awarded her over $635,000 in damages. The hospital where the procedure took place had previously settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

A psychiatrist who was called to testify about the womans ordeal justified the “treatment” and failure to inform the patient about the risks.

You may not even be aware that each year, 100,000 patients in the US undergo electroshock–many against their will.

Now that popular antidepressants like prozac, paxil and zoloft are being proven to cause suicide as a side-effect many fear there will be an increase in the number of electroshock treatment cases for the treatment of depression.

This procedure should be banned never to be used again. The case of Peggy Salters makes that point perfectly — ECT wiped out a lifetime of memory, including her 30 year marriage and the birth of her children. Does this sound like a way to treat someones depression?

Some studies in the UK have indicated that the rate of long term memory loss is as high as 79% of patients who are administered ECT therapy.

Former patients have reported devastating, permanent amnesia and cognitive impairment since ECT was first invented in 1938, but that has not hindered the treatment’s popularity with doctors. The first lawsuit for ECT amnesia, Marilyn Rice v. John Nardini, was brought exactly thirty years ago, and dozens of suits have followed.
