Kids On Multiple Psychiatric Drugs - Young Minds In Danger
It recently has been reported by ABC News and HealthDay News that there is a growing problem of children being placed on multiple psychiatric drugs at the same time.
It sure sounds to me like the psychiatrist (or doctor) feeds the poor child a drug that causes horrible side effects and then pushes a second drug on them to “treat” the side effects. I’ve seen this awful practice at work first hand.
The article quotes a study done to evaluate the increase of psychiatric drugging of our youth. The study analyzed over a 10-year period the frequency of multiple psychiatric drugging in pediatric cases. The article showed that this practice is on a dramatic increase in the United States, even though there are few scientific studies that can be used to justify it.
Co-author of the study, Dr. Joseph Penn, a child psychologist with the Bradley Hasbro Children’s Research Center (BHCRC) in Providence, R.I., and Brown Medical School, said in a prepared statement:
“This is a critical issue - it’s not uncommon to find a child on an antidepressant, a mood stabilizer and a sleep agent all at the same time, but there’s no research to see how these drugs interact with each other.”
The study also found that many times there isn’t even FDA approval for the use of these drugs in children at all. Not to mention using more than one of them simultaneously.
The FDA recently reported that some of these drugs actually cause suicidal thoughts and increase a patients likelihood of committing suicide by up to three times. Other groups allege that these very same drugs cause violent behavior. The question I have is: Who in their right mind would allow their child to be placed on drugs like these? I think it’s a disgrace that Doctors and psychiatrists somehow convince parents that this is in the best interest of their child. I wonder how often they actually tell the parents what the actual risks and side-effects are.
